hey guys, I just replaced the ball joints on my 02 excursion and I can't get the locking hubs to seat far enough in so that the retaining ring keeps them in place. The ring seats but then works out as I'm driving. There is something keeping the hub from sliding in far enough so that the ring/clip can set deep enough in its groove. Anyone have an idea what's causing that?
Do you have stock hubs? If so have you made sure the snap ring on the stub shaft was fully seated? Pry the stub shaft out towards the wheel side behind the bearing to make sure it's out far enough if you are not sure.
If WARN hubs have to tried spinning the hub itself before tightening? I know on my 99 the hub would look seated but if I spun the hub it's self it would seat a little better and tighten up.
They are the stock auto locking hubs. The washers and retaining clip on the stub axles went on easy so no problem there. It seems like the locking hub is hitting something that keeps it from going another 1/16" in which is all it would need. Its not hitting the stub axle so I don't know what else would have changed...
i used the new snap rings and I used the special tool to seat the axle into the knuckle to the correct depth. It doesn't seem like the axle is what's keeping the locking hub out. I am now suspecting that the stiff new o ring is isn't seating properly and that I need to drive it in with some extra force the first time with a new oring. what do you think?
Found the problem. When changing the ball joints or doing any suspension work that requires removing and replacing the auto locking hubs, if you install a new o-ring it will be stiff and will not want to fully seat. The locking hub retaining clip will install but not quite deep enough and the hub can fall out (ask me how I know). Grease the new o-ring and the hub seat really well and whack around the edges of the locking hub until it drives it in. Then the auto locking hub retaining clip will seat all the way in and you will be A-ok. Best of luck and thanks for the responses!
