Exclamation Replacing hubs

I have a 99 F350 crew cab 4x4 with the 6.8 V10. recently I had one of the plastic ***** on my hub fall off, not the whole hub just the plastic handle you grab to lock in the hub or set it back to free. Ive looked in a few parts stores and called a dealership and apparently you cant just buy this piece and have to replace the whole hub. Does anybody know of any alternatives or will i have to replace the entire hub and how hard of a job is it going to be. I need to do this soon cause this is preventing me from using my four wheel drive and i need it out here in the snow. Thanks

Do yourself a favor and go to www.Warnindustries.com to buy a set. You can buy a very good set of hubs for around $200, and they'll never seize like the crappy Ford ones. The Ford OEM hubs list for around $540 a pair, and they'll just seize up on you or break like yours did, so you'd be much better off getting some from Warn. They're cheaper to buy, will not seize, and should not break. As far as I know they're warranteed as well.

They are very easy to replace too. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the center cap. There is a retaining ring holding the hub in place. They make a special pair or plyers for this, but if you don't have any, grab some needle nose plyers instead. They won't work as well, but they'll get the job done. Squeeze the retaining ring to loosen it, and slide it off the hub. The old hub will/should slide right out. Take the new hub and put it in place. I'd recommend greasing it for added lubricity. Just don't go overboard. Once the hub is in, squeeze the retaining ring and slide it over the hub, and make sure the ring locks in place. Sometimes it can be a challenge to pop it back in. After the retaining ring is back in place, pop the center cap back on and you're all set! Doing both sides should only take you 10-20 minutes. First-timers may take more time. Hopefully this helps. Good luck!!

Who does build those hubs that come on the Fords? Never thought about that. Does Dana supply locking hubs?

Anyway, isn't that **** part of the hub body? Which must be close to the price of the entire hub assy. DD1684 is right about ease of replacement.

Do you have a four wheel drive truck center near you? Or an axle rebuilding place? They may have some junk hubs hanging around, and could just give you one.

It appears as though you should replace your hubs. There are a few choices of aftermarket vendors to choose from. I have had excellent service out of the Warn Premium hubs. Mile Marker hubs have gotten good reviews.

Warn are great hubs. From personal experience I recommend getting the Warn gold hubs. I would not go back to the Ford hubs, they are expensive and not well built.

You'll find instructions in the tech folder on how to change from automatic to manual hubs, While this isn't what you're doing, there are some great pictures of the hubs when taken apart that might help.

Thanks guys, looks like ill just be putting a new set of Warns on. I had Warn hubs on an old Blazer I had and never had any trouble with them. The factory ones are just junk, before it broke they were always tough to lock in and you wouldnt even be able to turn them half of the time

i've replaced the facotry hubs on my f-150 to the warn premiums and going to do so on my f-250. The premiums are all steel as apposed to the regular replacements or the ford factoy one's, which have plactic.

Warn "premium" hubs are the brass ones. warn also makes a black plastic for the SD. avoid.

also if you have "auto-lock" hubs instead of "lock-free" hubs you will have to d/c and plug the vacuum lines to each hub.

BTW, if you have "auto-free" hubs and replace them with warns, you lose the auto lock in feature ie: everytime you need 4x4 you climb out and lock'em in.

worth it, IMHO.

I've seen warns for $180.00 a set. fordjunk is $ 450.00 to change ONE SIDE.

I just spent half of the day attemting to install Warn hubs on my F350 come to find out the cap is very slightly too big at the base. The place purchased from neglected to ask if it was a dually. In total frustration, I have searched online for the part that would fit 2000 F350 Dually! I took these back this evening and he gave me another part number..I looked online at Warn and this part ALSO specifies not for a dually. Do they not make hubs to fit a dually??? I currently have MileMarker and they were crap too. Can anyone tell me what part it is I need. Thank you..getting very frustrated...

You might try Superwinch. Otherwise it's back to stock, which IMO, aren't bad hubs, strength wise (unless you do some serious off-roading). It's just that the Auto hubs have a nasty little tendency to leak their vacuum, making them useless as an auto hub. I've had my dually in some pretty nasty stuff and the stock auto hubs haven't broke or stuck yet (knock on wood).

Thanks...You have been lucky though... My truck came w/ shift on the fly and the auto hubs went south..so I put manual MM's in and they just went south after 3 years or so. Am I reading correctly that Warn does not make manual hubs for the dually? I have not read anything on the Superwinch... Thank you again for your input. If you do find a part number for the Warn please let me know. Obviously I can not count on the parts store for correct parts!

Don't get me wrong, I've had to change-out the $5.00 O-ring on my hubs because they failed and gave me an expensive set of manual hubs, but strength wise they've been alright. But back to the Warn issue. . .

Last time I talked to Warn (about a year ago) they told that they didn't make a hub that would fit our dually's and to the best of my knowledge that hasn't changed. I also had a chat with Dynatrac when I was looking into their "Combo" kit and they also told me that none of the Warn's would fit. Bummed me out 'cause I really wanted that kit.

EnviroCon,
I am going to order another pair of MM's since that is what I have but there are not any numbers on the hub. The part online says it fits Dana 50 & 60 series axles/30 spline. Do you know what our trucks have(mine is a 200 though). thx
