Speedometer fix

I recently bought my '82 F150 and the speedo doesn't work. When I went to replace the cable, I noticed there was no "gear" on the end of the cable that I took out. I have seen the speedo gear on LMC's website, but I don't know which I need (number of teeth). How do I find out which is right for my truck?

Thanks

Start here Speedometer Driven Gears - ???Gary's Garagemahal
You need to know your rear differential gear ratio and transmission type.

To get the correct speedometer DRIVEN gear at the end of the cable, the rear axle ratio, trans type and tire size must be known.

The gears have 16 thru 21 teeth and are nylon. They are available from Ford and auto parts stores, so there's no need to buy from LMC and then pay shipping charges.

Once I have all the info, where do I look to find which cog I need? 3.25, manual, and 26's

What manual? 3 M/T; Warner T-18 or New Process 435 4 M/T; RUG SR-OD 4 speed Overdrive?

26's doesn't tell me very much, because there were no P-Metric radial tires back then.

Once I know which M/T you have, will give you the tire possibilities.

It is a Borg Warner transmission. 3 speed with granny gear (creeper). I know, based on some research, that it is supposed to be a c5 or c6 (even though the web info says they are both 3-speed, whereas my shifter says 4). I don't know where else to look to find more transmission info. Sorry 😐. The tires are 215/70R15.

Sorry to keep coming back, but I really am hoping to be able to drive this without worrying about speeding.

Thanks

You say 3sp with granny gear.
Would that be a 4sp where 1st is a granny and not used most if the time so you (and others)start off in 2nd gear?

Also where did you get this "c5 or c6" from?
Is that from the cert sticker by the left door and if not give use the numbers (picture) and we can tell you what the truck left the factory with.

Thanks for your help, Bill! I tried filling out the "questionnaires " on some websites to get this, but I never seemed to have enough info. I even called the Ford place closest to me, and he pretty much told me that I needed the old one to figure it out. He also told me that he didn't carry any, but I could get one from White Bear. You're spot on. 😊

From several different charts on the internet. The door sticker only said 'f' in the transmission spot.

Thanks all!

As Bill pointed out it is a T18 stick trany.
Same trany I have in my 81 F100 project truck.
The c4, c5?, c6 are auto tranys and all are 3sp autos.

FYI ford also had a 3sp w/OD stick trany that some call a 4sp
