I am having a very expensive week. Need an engine harness for my truck for oberfueling issue, bought a house yesterday, and trans lost 4th pulling too heavy. I have a 92 with e4od and i found a e4od from a 97. Will they have same connectors?
Ford made a lot of changes to the E4OD internally for 1996. The changes really made the trans even more robust and reliable. I remember reading about it when looking for a swap for my truck. I'm not sure if the electrical connectors changed, but it should still be a straight swap.
Also, NEVER, EVER, TOW WITH THE OVERDRIVE (OD) ENGAGED! On later Fords the button on the shift lever says "Tow" instead of "OD OFF" cause ot caught so many people out. The Overdrive can't handle the loads, unfortunately.

Well, that's totally wrong.
The transmission was designed to tow at maximum GCWR in overdrive.
The later models do have TOW/HAUL on the button instead of OD OFF. The funny thing is that TOW/HAUL does NOT turn off overdrive. It changes the shifts to a higher speed, but it still will shift to overdrive.
Now, back to the original question.
If the later E4OD has the correct bellhousing, and is the same drive (4x4 or 4x2) then it will work. As mentioned above you'll need the older solenoid body and TS sensor.
