I have an EFI 434 cubic inch 500 HP+ Ford 400 motor in my '53 F100. It runs great, but recently I can smell oil burning when driving it, and have oil spots when I park. My E4OD trans was rebuilt a couple of years ago, and I don't put many miles on it from year to year. I traced the oil to coming out of the inspection hole in the bell housing. It appears to be transmission oil. I don't have a plug for that hole.
The problem is usually the torque converter hub seal. They were not very good in the E4OD. There is an aftermarket seal made from Viton that is much, much better. The plug in the hole is to keep debris out of the bellhousing, not to prevent leaks.
Remove the transmission, remove the torque converter, and remove the pump. You need to replace the pump O-ring, the gasket, and the hub seal. The pump was removed to that you can inspect the torque converter hub bushing. If it is worn, replace that, too. All four parts are pretty inexpensive.
Note: You will have to disassemble the front pump to inspect or replace the pump bushing.
Not hard but don't want you to go any crazier trying to replace pump bushing without taking pump apart.
In general bushings are simple to replace with correct fitting bushing driver and lots of grief without good fitting homemade or factory bushing driver.
Test fit bushing on converter hub before reassembly!
Times like this an arbor press is a beautiful thing.
