I have a Dana 44 Traction Lock I found at the junkyard out of a 1982 F-150. How hard would it be to install in my 1979 F-150? It is the same gear ratio. I am talking about a straight front axle. Thanks!
Its not easy. Takes about a day and is easier to take the axle out to do it.
Did the traction lock come from a front axle? Your Dana 44 front axle should be high pinion reverse rotation. So you need gears from a high pinion axle. Alternatively you could swap your existing ring gear onto the Traction Lock carrier. That way you would not have to remove the pinion which would save a lot of setup time. Still will need to shim the new carrier correctly.

No reverse rotation, reverse cut gears. Never mix R&P gears, they are matched from the mfgr.
Sorry wrong terminology. Thanks for the correction.
I was suggesting to use both the ring and pinion from his existing truck. Not mix and match. All he is changing is the carrier as he wants the traction lock.
Need some specialty tools to set up gears and get the proper pinion depth and backlash.
If you pull from the JY, pull all the shims, etc too so you have those. Buying a Dana 44 master install kit would be best - that way you get all new bearings, seals, and shims.
