So over the weekend I found my bolt holding the brake hose to the axle was rusted and it broke. I was thinking I could just tap it out and move on but thanks to Good to Doo for reminding me this is also the axle vent.
So my thought is even if I can get the bolt out there is a good chance I could get trash(rust or metal shaving) in the axle so guessing it is a good time to flush axle.
My thought is I could remove gears and drain most of the oil, then lift the driver side of the axle a few inch higher then spray brake clean down the vent hole to flush all the trash out. Maybe bend the straw so it helps push every thing to the center. Allow it all to dry and refill with new oil.
Follow up question do I have to press the axle seals in on the 9" or can I just push them in by hand? Might be a good time replace those also.
The seals go on the axel first, then press the bearing on. AS far as the vent bolt, try an easy out first, Taking the diff apart is a lot of work. Also if you do pull it apart, put a drain plug in at the same time.
