Need new engine

My 223 engine is dead.. What's the easiest drop in engine and trans for 1964 ford f250. Im not looking for a drag truck or do the front end swap, just something that will be reliable. I have the 3 speed manual transmission and would prefer an automatic but it's not a deal breaker.

What's the easiest? Another 223. Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously, your options are only limited by your imagination and fabrication skills. I am not super familiar with the 223 bellhousing pattern, but my quick research looks like it is not very common with other engines, so you will at least need a new bellhousing if you stick with the 3 speed and swap in a new engine.

If not, probably the easiest swap would be the 240 or 300 inline 6 as they share the same bellhousing pattern with the Windsor family of engines so an automatic would be pretty easy to find that would mate up with no issues. Plus, the they both were an option in the slicks, so motor mounts would be easy too. If you want to go with a V8, the FE family (352/360/390) would be your best bet as it was also an available option as well, once again making the motor mounts easy and the C6 automatic is readily available for FEs.

I figured out that pretty much anything I put in is going to have to have custom mounts ect so I may as well toss a 302 in with a c4. Although one of my good friends is a mechanic and he said he'd help me for free if I put a Chevy 350 in lol. I found a couple 223s but they aren't close and they would probably need a rebuild and if I were to go that route I'd just fix mine.
Mine wouldn't start, I thought my timing chain jumped but decided to do a compression test before and it was running about 65psi. Not quite enough to ignite fuel (or inflate a balloon lol). Tossing a v8 was on my things to do down the road list,I just assumed it was a longer road.

302 is a little more work up front with fabricating motor mounts, but way better parts availability than the FE series.

IMHO, if you want simple and an automatic I'd be looking for a 302 and a C4.
