hi. i am not much of a mechanic and definately a complete novice when it comes to old trucks (i have a 69 429 t-jet galaxie) so thought i better ask for some advice. anyway i am looking at buying a 62 f250 4x4 -no engine. question is will a 1969 390cu out of my galaxie parts car work if i get a different bell housing for the original manual transmission that comes with the truck (original engine was a 292). if i can get the original transmission to bolt up to my 390 can it handle the additional hp/torque. (quite a jump from a 292 to a 390)
how hard is it to find a transmission that will fit the truck and a 390 swap if things don't work out with the original tranny (also the seller may want to hang on to the tranny)?.
is 292 to a 390 swap a bad idea in this case? any reason why it shouldn't be fairly easy (i assume i can buy after market engine mounts etc)?
If you do not have a cross member mount bell and the front legs for the FE you will need custom mounts made for the engine and a new transmission with a mount.
The T18 4 speed was also used behind 352s Along with the standard 3 speed.
To convert it without the correct mounts you can add custom motor mounts like a later 4x4 and a new trans with a tail shaft mount.
thanks garbz. a little depressing but sounds like i better pass on this one. i could fab most of the parts but to be honest, i don't want to spend the time.
