Needing help I got a deal i could'nt pass up i bought a running 390 with a c6 for 50 bucks! i already had planed to swap out my 300 6 for a 302 i already had, but now with my recent buy i want to put in the 390 what does this envolve? i had to get motor mount towers for the 302 are they different for the 390 and if so does anybody know where i could get some? also my truck has a 3 speed on tree where can i find linkages for the c6?
The truck has a 3 speed manual now. I was wondwering about the perches that go from the framw to the motor mounts so you say the perches are the same from the 300 straight six and the 390 FE.
Go with the 390 for sure. I started w/ a 300 & 3sp. 300 is better truck motor than the 302, very nearly the same displacement and much better low end torque. The 390 is an upgrade that you will notice. I don't see any reason that you can't reuse the 3sp you have assuming you acquire an FE bellhousing. You didn't mention whether you have a 2wd or 4x4. If a 2wd, relocating the transmission crossmember is very simple if neccessary. Just rest the crossmember on the lower frame rail, and drill holes where the tranny needs to locate. I doubt this is an issue, as I'm fairly certain that the 300 locates the same as the FE (360/390)motor. You will need to get a V8 radiator, and I'd look for a HD radiator. The reason is that the I6 radiator has it's inlet and outlet on the opposite corners of the radiator from V8 applications. As far as 4x4, I've only gotten a 4x4 recently and I haven't any experience swapping an engine in one yet.
You dropped a Mopar into your truck? That's interesting, got any pics? I used to have a 71 Roadrunner (1995-1998) so I know a little about the ol' wedges.
It ain't in there yet. BUT, it will be going in. We got a bellhousing from a late seventies big block 4-speed dodge truck (not easy to find), had it modified, got the correct splined input shaft. Dodge trucks used the same NP-435's, but the bolt pattern was different.
All that's left is to build motor mounts. The 440 actually fits with plenty of room to spare!
should be fun!
i'll make sure and get lots of pics once we start the process. lot to do b4 that though!
nope sticking with the np-435. The only difference in the dodge v. ford np-435 is the bottom two mounting holes are higher on the dodge. I figured the NP-435 would probably hold up a bit better in the truck.
And yes, the BIG BLOCK truck 4-speed bellhousings are VERY VERY hard to find, small block ones are a bit easier to come by. I found another at a swap meet but the guy wanted 250$ the one I have I got some guy in "BFE" wyoming to pull it out of a truck and ship it to me for 75$. He musta been nuts!
