Tachometer lag

I installed a tach in my 75 F100. It works but there is a slight amount of lag between the time the engine changes rpm and what it reads on the gauge. It is an Equus tach that is using an inductive pickup instead of a direct signal from the ignition coil, and I was wondering if this could be the reason for the lag.

What does the inductive pickup mount? On a sparkplug wire?

Yes, it clamps onto the #8 plug wire, and isn't crossing any other plug wires either.

Is this the instruction sheet for your tach? If so, why don't you hook it up like a conventional tach would, on the negative of the coil and try it?
