OK, I've been very stupid. 1955 F100, 6 cylinder, very stock, 3 speed. I'm slowly bringing it back to life. It was running lovely (from a separate fuel feed bottle, while I fix the fuel line) Well, I turned her over to start her but couldn't figure out why she wouldn't stay running. I ran her for about 10 seconds by keeping my finger on the start button....ran nicely but cut out if I took my finger off. Now the stupid bit....I hadn't turned the ignition key....and that's why it wouldn't stay running!! So now....it won't turn over. Just a loud click when I hit the button. Tried bypassing the solenoid and still no movement from the starter. Battery strong, and electrics all work. Tried the rocking back and forth in 3rd gear. Removed all connections and cleaned thoroughly.
Have I fried the starter?????
If checking all the heavy connections to the battery, relay, and starter, change nothing, try jumpering a heavy cable, directly to the starter post. Make sure the truck is out of gear.
Well it's also a useful test even when everything seems to be working OK. Run it before there's ever a problem. Check to see if any improvement can be had.
So...pulled the starter...and this is what I found. (Note to self, don't try to start the engine while it's running..!!!!) Is that piece available or a who'll new starter??
That's called the Bendix starter drive, replacements are available. I'd suggest NOS or source one from a tractor supply.
One thing you'll want to do is inspect the ring gear teeth on the flywheel for damage all the way around.
The starter itself - rebuilds from the average parts store can be hit and miss. Nobody makes "new" ones afaik. If there is a motor shop nearby you might have them rebuild it. Done right they are as good as new for the most part.
So...pulled the starter...and this is what I found.
Bendix inertia starter drive that contains a large coil spring. The drive is retained to the shaft of the armature with a roll pin.
The drive has to be unwound by hand to access the roll pin, then once the roll pin is in place, the drive has to be wound back up by hand which takes muscle.
The part on Mac or Lincoln Old Parts seems to be the same part number as this 1CM-11350C (but this is much cheaper) Is this the correct part? Mine looks like it has a spring in the top that's not on this. Check the pictures. Has the part been updated?
I agree, there are a lot of starters out there for sale and you can see the bendix in plain view so just look around. I've had a terrible time with the repop stuff. I've been through 3 solenoids and then decided to clean up my original and it works great. I don't why but SOME of the stuff be sold is complete junk.

Should be able to find period NOS or NORS for not too much money. Then, you know it will work, and it will last.
