How many miles are you fellas getting out of your auto transmissions with the 5.4L ?
I have 180,000 miles on my truck and am just curious how many more miles I expect to get out of it. If its a time bomb waiting to happen, I need to start gathering parts/or a replacement transmission. I depend on this vehicle too much to have it down for long periods of time.
I think it all depends on your use. I got 160,000 out of mine before it died. Had it rebuilt, 41,000 so far on rebuild.
Mine didn't show any signs of impending failure, it just let go when it downshifted going up a hill.
My 2001 had about 240,000 when I sold it, on the original trans.. I had changed the fluid 3 times ( about every 75K).......... my 2002 has 165K miles and no indication of problems.
I'm getting ready to pull my Jeep on a trailer to Colorado, and then through the mountains. It would not work the other way around. My jeep could not pull my pickup home if the trans goes out.
There is a Youtube video of pulling apart a transmission, and another that shows repairing one. I think if I could round up the parts, I might be able to do it, but I would rather have a warranty when I have to do it.
Overdrive Servo snap ring broke and lost overdrive a little after 170k. $2400 at the local transmission shop to rebuild and install a towing shift improvement kit with a 5 year warranty. Trucks got a little over 205k on it now.
I have read the early 4R75E's had issues with the OD servo snap ring breaking. I probably could've just had them replace the snap ring but they suggested an entire rebuild due to the mileage the truck had. (also no warranty on the repair, so if the snap ring or something else fails)
Put a drain type pan on it, new filter then slowly change out mercon V over a couple of weeks 4-5 quarts at a time . Make sure you have a trans cooler on it , stacked plate type . Keep it red and smelling good .
Well, I successfully pulled the Jeep and trailer to mid Colorado, and back, with no transmission issues, turned over 181,000 on my way home and its still going strong.
I'm Pretty proud of the Ol' Girl!! Only scare I had was in Western Ks, when I pulled up to a restaurant and just before coming to a complete stop while parking, the engine shook and died before shutting it off. I started it back up after we sat and had some ice cream and it never gave any more issues. (perhaps water in the fuel?Perhaps the difference in Altitude from when it was last shut off? Perhaps heat soaked?) What are your thoughts?
I would expect more than 250,000 miles from it. If you see erratic operation, or the fluid getting dark or black it's on it's way out.
Hi Mark! IIRR, you did a bit of the engineering on this one and IIRR it's the same (close to it) tranny in my wife's 97 Cougar V8........ my wife's car gets to live in heavy downtown Los Angeles traffic....had it since new and they have both been great drivetrains! Thank you for all the great work on these trannys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
