Hey all, just bought a 1996 F250 4x4 with the good ol 7.3. I have saved for a long time to buy a truck like this and I'm broke now that I have it I was wondering what kind of mods can be done for cheap or free.
A chip is probably the best bang for the buck. You would be looking at 3-500 and it will give about 60-70hp increase.
But in o0rder to see that, you will also want a high flowing intake and a better exhaust
I've been thinking about a chip, intake, straight pipe but I don't know if a chip would be good on a 317k mile engine
I have absolutely 0 experience with this sort of thing so would a chip reduce the engines life expectancy?
I wouldn't hesitate to chip it, we aren't talking 300hp tunes akin to common rails here. Look into a tuner that has gauges and diagnostic tools built in. I'm a fan of analog gauges, but I got a tuner from dp tuner for my 7.3 van that has all gauges built in, and I've grown to like it. I got it because of the reasons I listed above....add all those things up and it's a fair price.
I would be more concerned about MAINTENANCE at that kind of milage
like injectors, HPOP, glow plugs, Fuel pump, turbo, up-pipes etc.
The stock auto really doesnt like anything more than stock power levels either
TS chip About $300
Intake About $100
Exhaust About $400
Gauges(exhaust and boost) about $300
Don't believe the hype that a TS chip (from anyone) will give more than 70hp. The OBS trucks dont have big enough injectors
