I picked up a '99 Mountaineer with some electrical gremlins for $350. I looked in the EVTM and it shows a relay module under the dash on the driver's side. It has three rows with two relays in each row and one larger relay at the bottom. None of the documentation I have tells me which relay is which. It got me to wondering if there should be a cover that has this information. Is there supposed to be a cover? If so, does the cover tell you which relay is which?
I guess there are times when even the EVTM is useless. I poked around on the internet, thinking there must be somewhere that shows these relays, but all i could find was the under dash and under hood relays/fuses.????
I would check with a Ford dealer parts department, they might be able to pull up an exploded view of the relays.
Well, I went to the junkyard and found a relay module cover. Nothing on the cover that indicates which is which. My need for knowing has gone away at the moment as fixing the power window door ground has made the strange behavior go away.
I bought the relay cover so that the Mountaineer is more complete now. I might just go to the library and see if the Haynes or Chilton's manuals provide any clues before I run out and buy one. I've noticed that sometimes the non-Ford manuals do provide some useful tips / shortcuts for certain things and I don't mind paying for textbooks as part of my education if the books provide value.
No joy at the dealer, they say to check the owners manual which i presume didn't come with the truck
Like you say maybe Haynes or Chiltons will have the info.
The owner's manual is online and doesn't cover the relays in the relay module - only the relays in the box under the hood. One of the relays is bigger so I guess I could pull it and search the part number and see what comes up. But that only gets me one of seven. There are still 6 identical relays to figure out.
Is there any chance you can post a picture of the relay box you are referring to? Maybe it's actually the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) or something else that someone will recognize by the photo.
