Tips for IP Adjustment

Hello again everyone!

I have been having fun going through this 84 6.9 and trying to get it to where I can tow my camper (22ft 2006 Mallard) with it. I have a ways to go, including installing a brake controller, removing the DMI bumper, and installing a stock bumper and receiver hitch. Also the 7 pin plug.

One of the first things I noticed on the test drive was the black smoke under load. Its not a haze, but its pretty thick. I was not getting after it real hard, just what I would call normal acceleration (no WOT accelerations) to get up to highway speed. I know I need to address this before I tow, and don't feel like springing for a pyro at this time.

My question is, what is the best way to get back to base line or a little above if you do not know how much a previous person turned it up in the first place? I guess if I have to go flat by flat I can do that, just wondering if there was a better way.

I had an IDI a couple of years ago but never touched the pump so I am a little nervous about adjusting it. This truck also has an electric fuel pump installed on the frame rail, so I assume the lift pump on the motor has been bypassed. Weather this has any bearing or not, I am not sure.

Once again I would appreciate any insight and knowledge you guys could offer. Thank you!

Step 1, leave pump alone.

Step 2, install turbo

Really though, just going to have to back it off bit by bit till you get to the right spot.

Oh believe me, If I could Turbo, I would! Just not in the finances at this time.

Thanks, thats kinda what I figured, just gonna have to tinker with it, I'm more concerned about starving it out. Just gonna go one flat at a time I guess.

One flat at a time is probably the way to go. You would be surprised the difference one flat makes. Mine was the opposite. Couldn't even get a haze out of it at WOT, probably because I added 3 inch exhaust and a straight through muffler and opened up the intake a bit by cutting out the soup bowl. I increased the fuel by one flat and now I get a nice light haze when I'm pulling hills and a little more power.
