226 head leak

Just had head surfaced, new gasket(installed as per manual) torqued bolts 60lbs,went back and torqued to 70 lbs(as per manual) after putting collant in I saw a drip of coolant(left bank) Started it up coolant oozing out all around head at block. I double checked my torquing with another torque wrench it was good. If I go another 10lbs,will it harm anything? Any thoughts will be helpful. Again this is a 226 in a 49 f-1.

I would not go any tighter. Did you check the head after surfacing? Hard to believe they'd screw up such a simple job, but results speak for themselves. What gasket did you use, it's not a copper one is it? Did you coat it at all?

Could be the deck. Could be that around the bolt holes, the material has pulled up (a good reason not to go tighter). All you can do is pull it, check the head and deck, maybe this time coat the gasket with CopprKote.

On the V8's, most "gurus" recommend backing away from the factory 70 ft-lb value to as low as 55. With good surfaces, it appears to be all that's needed, and the decks on these engines aren't real thick. Last thing you need is to pull the threads out of the block!

Engine was rebuilt 3 years ago. no leaks. This all started with an exhaust leak. While pulling the exhaust I saw coolant coming out of one intake port. Exhaust leak was a hole in the no1 exhaust port Thanks for your advice.

Don't know if the head was maged. I did the block and found nothing. Will go to machine shop in a couple days and see what they think.

How did they fix the exhaust port? I kind of doubt a crack would leak noticeably with a cold engine.

Did you put any sealer (Permatex etc.) on the head bolt threads?
