Correct 2.3 head bolt tightning specs/sequence?

Hi guys. I had the misfortune of a blown head gasket recently on my 2.3 B2300. The performance of the truck was getting worse and worse and it finally got to the point to where it wouldn't go anymore unless I floored it in every gear. That, and it was running funny with no codes whatsoever.

Anyway, I pulled the head to find a compression leak between cylinders 2 and 3 (fire ring had signs of leakage), as well as a minor gasket leak from cylinder #2 to the coolant passage, which explained the black coolant that started getting worse about 2 months ago.

The question is, what is the actual torque specs to tighten the head bolts? Upon research I keep finding various torque specs to tighten down the head. Some are just torque it down, others are torque it down and then use an angle meter to tighten it xx degrees more. Does anyone have the actual 1997 service manual to show what it actually says? I have an angle meter, so that won't be a problem. I also have new head bolts.

Any help would be great!

I see you don't have any replies so I'll see if I can get things started & maybe others that have done this will chime in with tips & things to watch out for.
First, chase & blow out the block head bolt threads with a tap & air, to make sure the threads are clean & smooth, so you get accurate & even torque on the head bolts.
Get the block, head gasket & head mating surfaces squeaky clean & keep it that way when setting the head in place.
Orient the crank shaft to position the pistons & the camshaft to position the valves as specified, so they are oriented to not contact each other when placing the head on the block.
The Haynes manual says after year 94, to tighten head bolts to 50 ft/lbs in the sequence illustrated, which is from the middle outward toward each end, alternating fore & aft & side to side, then when all have been tightened to 50 ft/lbs, turn each an additional 90-100 deg in the sequence shown.

Didn't see your post until now, but I called my Dad's friend this morning. He told me to go to FelPro's website and they would have it on there. Sure enough, they do!

Ok, let us know how it goes. Just make sure you have the valves & pistons oriented correctly before setting the head on the block.
