I'm definitely an amature, but what I did with my extra paint, was to buy some bran new clean empty quart paint cans, to store my left overs. This way I had a good seal, and not a can with a dented ,gummed up seem, only to later find the contents all dried up. Just make sure your extra paint is thoroughly shaken, b4 putting in new cans. Just my 2 cents. Best of luck on what sounds like is going to be a beautiful paint job.
I painted my F3, cab only so this does not include the bed. Very much a beginner as this was my first ever paint job and I used a gravity spray gun. I used around 4 litres of primer, 6.5 litres of paint (2 for interior, 4.5 for exterior), 2 litres of clear lacquer and around 9 litres of thinners. This was all cellulose or 1K paint as I didn't have the breathing apparatus for 2K
Sorry! Gallons confuse me a bit as there are 3 different sizes of gallon depending which country you're in! I think your US one is about 4litres roughly
Hi Mac, I purchased 1 gallon of PPG single stage Acrylic Urethane to paint the same areas that you mentioned at the beginning of this thread. I applied 2 coats and still have about 1 quart left. As mentioned earlier, there are primers that are also required. I used epoxy primer to seal the bare metal from moisture, don't forget the hardener. Then build primer and probably body putty. The hardener is expensive and what I used has a 30 day shelf life.
You will have to decide if you want to use single stage (color with clear combined ) or two stage ( color coat then clear coat ). They both have their advantages. For my daily use truck, I used single stage. For my seldom driven out of the garage 39 Ford Deluxe Coupe I used two stage.
What you use for a spray gun will also determine the amount of paint you will use. The syphen guns waist probably 65% of the paint that they spray. I don't know if they are even sold any longer. You will need 2 guns, one for primer with a larger tip and one for color and clear with smaller tip. Paint supplier should tell you which size tip to use for their paint and primer. I use a generic style gun, probably made in China, for primer and bought an Iwata LPH400 for color and clear.
Another web site that I go to for information is Hotrodders.com. They have a section for exterior work that will probably have answers to any painting question that you will have.
