I have a lot of random questions that don't add up enough to make a specific thread so Ill make a catch all
anyone else is free to ask or answer I'm sure others have short questions not worth a whole thread but still needing a answer
like
- I have a 360/390 with factory a/c- how tall a valve covers will fit with the a/c
- or what firewall padding is the best
- where does everyone like to mount there switches
- ive seen some led conversions most are hokey who has seen a quality job or kit
What does front sump and rear sump mean trying to find an oil pan for my 390 and I keep coming up with these options but I can't get a clear definition
What does front sump and rear sump mean trying to find an oil pan for my 390 and I keep coming up with these options but I can't get a clear definition
The "sump" is where the majority of the oil sits, the deeper part of the pan - either at the front or the rear of the pan. In this photo you can see that both would bolt on to the same engine but the sump is in different places:
For our trucks, the choice depends usually on axle clearance.
Mount the switches where they are easy to get to and will not be hit by your knees when you get in and out of the truck, or by the center setting passengers feet.
Front sump oil pan on a 460 out of a car or 2wd F250 truck 73?-79. Rear sump oil pan on 351M to clear the front pumpkin of the front axle with stock suspension on a F250.
You can run a front sump car 460 pan, but you CAN hit that oil pan with the front pumpkin if you off road it hard. Especially if your 79 F250 has worn out High Boy front springs...thanks PO.
ND says: 460 WAS not available (FROM THE FACTORY) with 4WD or a Manual Trans until 1983, then only in F250/350's / No 460's available in F100's after 1976, F150's after 1979 (CA:1978), Passenger Cars after 1978 / No 460's available in 1980/82 F250/350's, E250/350's only.
I think you may be confused I have a 390 not at 460
No confusion on my part, I read that you are looking for a 390 oil pan, I just wanted to explain the REASON you might need a front or rear sump pan.
And my experience is with the common 460 swap issues, that I though might be causing you issues. Good luck on the hunt. Jegs, and Summit might be a place to ck for a pan.
ive been looking around the threads found a bunch about 460 tall valve cover clearance with the blower box
but I haven't seen anyone ask about if tall valve covers will clear the a/c compressor.
now before everyones like "of course it wont with a York unit!" I'm asking about the Sanden units
Here's another question someone just gave me some random valve covers through research found out there for a Chevy small block 360 any idea if they'll fit on my Ford FE 360 I'm leaning towards the no but I'd like a good idea from you guys and no I haven't had the time to mock them up to the heads yet
here's another
what temp do you like your C6 trans to run at?
what's "too hot?"
same with wheel bearings
when you check them what is "too hot"
C6 ---Run as cool as can be. They say life expectancy goes down on the tranny as temps go up. Have read it starts around 180. There should be charts on the internet showing relationships between temp and tranny life.
