questions
how would that affect my mpg
how would that affect my towing ability on hills
how would that affect my top end

I don't plan on going any faster that 65-70 in the beast with or without a load
and I don't plan on towing anything heavier than 5000 lbs.
In general, numerically lower ratios mean:
higher MPG
lowered towing ability on hills
higher top end speeds
decreased engine wear

Numerically higher ratios generally mean the opposite.

The 390 is a stout engine when all is right with it.

My F-250 with the Dana 60 (or perhaps 61) has a 460 and a C6. The ratio is 3.07. The original owner bought it to pull a camper trailer around N. CA. (I don't know what its weight was.) He seemed satisfied with the results. So far, I haven't pulled any large loads with it. It does well with lighter trailers. I like its highway performance, but continue to try to improve its MPG, which is low to mid teens.

Life generally is a compromise of some sort. Such it is when choosing a single axle ratio to use.

You will have to decide where you are with it currently, and what, if anything, you would like to change.

Well, while the location can effect how the torque of braking twists an axle/leaf spring combo, I don't think there is any effective difference in braking force.
Clamping force is clamping force, no matter what part of the rotor it's applied to.

On a big heavy leaf spring equipped rear end, I don't think it matters much for braking performance. It would be more for accessory or shock mount clearance, or perhaps protection for the caliper itself.
Those are other criteria for mounting location that could be used.

Just curious which way you were thinking. In other words, what did you mean by "larger" ring and pinion?

And you don't do and/or with gears. It's both or none. They are matched sets.

Measure

Do yourself a huge favor and pull the dimensions on that pan and make sure your fitment is going to work, although I dont think your going to have a problem, im not familiar with the 4x2 undercarriage, but that pan is DEEP .. I have all kinds of room right there so you should also... but one never knows...

Well first and foremost I want to say thanks to everybody for some great info
Ozzy H thanks a bunch for that break down on how gear ratios work I now have a little better understanding of it all
One ton Basecamp thanks for the caliper info when I said larger I meant like going from 3.73 up to 4.10 thanks for the other info I didn't know these things were match sets this is all a severe learning curve for me
While I've been working on cars since I was a young kid I've never really given a crap about specs or numbers or any of the other stuff if it's broken I normally take it apart put it back together and it works the numbers and the specs and all that other stuff I never really gave a crap about until now
And Jake when I get home I plan on measuring the pan and put them up on here comparing them to the measurements on the milodon website cuz that's a good idea

I know how that works too Airborne. I know what I know from fiddling with stuff. Not too much on books (except science fiction!) but can now read a wiring diagram well enough to be dangerous.
The rest I just picked up as I go. And I've been going a long time now and used to have a pretty good memory. So some of the good stuff is still in there bouncing around.

Good luck.

Oh, and I'll add that there are often no hard and fast facts about gear ratio and fuel economy. Not in the real world anyway.
Generally they consider the taller/higher gear ratios as better for economy, but that's only if the rest of the vehicle/engine combination can handle it. Sometimes you can actually gain mileage with a lower/deeper ratio (higher numbers = "lower ratio" and lower numbers = "higher ratio") putting the engine into it's sweet spot.
A lot of that has to do with tire size, vehicle weight and very much about the aerodynamics.
But those are subjects for another time...

Oil pan

Well Jake you were right it was a good thing that I double check the measurements on my oil pan
Luckily milodon makes a 7 quart oil pan for our trucks that still fit in the stock area part number is 31130

Lincoln Mark VIII Wiring

Ok so here's another conundrum.

I got a Mark 8 fan
motor # - F3LH-8K621-AA -made in Canada (coincidently matches my truck lol)
fan # - F3LE-8146-AC - is the big 18 inch

ok I have looked at a lot of the threads to make heads or tails of my fan
but alas I cant figure out if my fan is a 1-speed or 2-speed

I have bench tested it but it didn't seem to have any difference in speed between the 2 wires

The motor has a white plug on it but no access panel behind the plug on the back of the motor
The wiring harness length that came with it (junkyard find) has Blue, Black, Black colors

But as it stand if I cant figure if its 1 or 2 speed when I go to install it, I'm just going to wire it 1 speed style because from everything I've read on here no one (or so few and far between I haven't read it) has had to use the high side of the fan most just roll with the low or never get it hot enough to use the high side.

Opinions/ideas/thoughts???......

Ok, some questions you should actually spend 5 minutes researching BEFORE you ask.

First, chevy never made a 360, and second, if you even compared the valve covers at all, you would see they aren't even close.
Don't be offended if the old guys might expect you to engage your thinker before running to the key board. Some of the best lessons we learned were from old grumpy guys who didn't take time to be touchy feely.
