Engine removal?

Going to pull the 302 out of my dads 84 ford f-150 2wd

Any good threads for engine removal?

Anyone have any tips? Do most people leave the tranny in if their not doing anything with it?

Whats everyone lift by? Bolt a plate to where the carb bolts up?

I have a harbor freight hoist does that the height to pull it without taking the grill off?

Anyone have any tips or links to a good thread would be appreciated.

If you leave the tranny on, you need to tilt the front of the engine up steeply and lift very high for the back of tranny to clear. So it depends on your lift (cherry picker or overhead). If you have a lifting plate that bolts to the intake it will work fine (use all four bolt holes and be sure you have long enough bolts). Mnay prefer to use bolts located on the front and back of the opposite cyl heads.

I have an engine lift tool (sort of a bar with lift points at each end and a threaded rod inside so the "center lift eye" where the lift hook goes can be moved forward or back by turning the center rod (with crank or ratchet) to tilt the engine as you pull it. You need one of these (Harbor Fright or Northern Tolls has them). Looks like this https://www.walmart.com/ip/Torin-Jac...&wl13=&veh=sem
If your using a Cherry Picker style lift check the lift height and length of boom, to be sure it will clear the front bumper when fully lifted (more of a concern if the boom can not be extended due to engine/tranny weight). Otherwise you may need to remove the bumper and radiator support core. I have had to remove the tires and set on short jack stands to get truck lower.

If leaving the tranny on, drain it first or you will have a mess when you tilt the tranny (assuming you have the driveshaft style where the slip yoke is in the trans).

Leave the transmission in place.

Most engine lifts will lift high enough for the oil pan just to clear the radiator support, yours is a 2wd so that is even better.

Take the radiator out, just to avoid poking a hole in it.

You are going to need some sort of jack for the transmission. You will be lifting the engine up, and the trans is going to come up also. Go as high as you can until it hits the firewall, then take a block of wood and a jack and put it under the trans and pump it up to put pressure on it. Then you are going to start wiggling the engine around till it comes free. You will see what needs to happen, the engine needs to go high enough so it can be slid forward. So the trans has to come up with it, since you can't get the engine away from the trans until you can get the engine forward. The jack under the trans needs to be there to help take pressure off the alignment pins and other things between the bellhousing and the engine. Even then, you will need to wiggle the engine around to break it free from the trans.
