I got an 85 F250, V8, 460 engine. I have a pretty bad oil leak out of both main seals, and reading over the procedure in chilton's, as well as reading countless posts, i know i have to "lift" the engine.
-What is involved in this?
-What do I have to disconnect?
-How high does it have to be lifted?
-Can I lift it from the underside with a jack and blocks (like chilton's suggests), or must I use an engine lift?
You can lift it from underneath, just make sure you use a large piece of wood that will distribute the load to the vertical edges of the oil pan. If you put pressure right in the flat center part, it's not very strong there and will bend up.
Hi Franklin2.To replace the front and rear main seals he has to remove the oil pan.Lifting BY the oil pan would make it quite awkward to remove the oilpan, don`t you suppose?
Not really too bad. According to my Haynes manual. You need to remove the radiator, fan, also the transmission, exhaust pipes. Then put a jack on the engine, under the oil pan near the front, with a block of wood. Lift just enough to remove the pan. Then put blocks of wood under the engine support brackets, then remove the jack. This is just a quick overview of what the manual I have said about the matter.
Yes, you do lift the engine by the oil pan, and then put blocks between the frame and the motor mounts, and then take the jack out. It's not easy no matter how you do it.
You could take the hood off, park under a decent size tree, and use a come-a-long to lift the engine up to block up the motor mounts too.
Yea, wont have a tree handy where I want to do the job. I've read throug the steps a hundred times in the chiltons manual- just not sure about the "lifting" step. I know what I have to disconect to do take off the oil pan, just not what I'd have to unhook to safely lift the engine.....

I guess the answer to that question you will find out as you begin! I would start with the obvious. Exhaust, fan, shroud, etc. Work slowly and diligently, remove what is necesary. Dont undo half the engine to find out you only needed to remove one thing.
Man, that's all I do is work slow....If there's anything I do well, it's that....
keep your head up man! You wanna do it right the first time. Heck I did my cam job in my truck in a week! doing it right makes all the difference! Plus im sure your tired of the oil all over the ground. I know I was!
That's the thing, I'm into landscaping - on the side, but still - and I HATE dumping oil on customers front lawns. They start bitchin, I lose money, yada yada. Plus, honestly its just not good business. I work mostly in my neighborhood, and I'm not the kind of guy to poop in my neighbor's yard.
That's why I gotta fix this. I'm not that much of a mechanic, but I can follow instructions, and stay motivated.
I do appreciate EVERYBODY's help. You guys kick a**.
I just hope that once I start tearing this thing apart, I can get it back together...

Yea I know the feeling. What I do is if im going into a new project that ive never done before. I take pictures and bag every nut and bolt, where it goes. Doing this job isnt rocket science but does take some amount of brain. But you do need a clean organized work area where thing arent going to get lost. NEVER leave a bolt out no matter how worthless it may seem. You may undo what you just worked so hard to do!
