This is my first post on this site although I enjoy visiting as much as I can. Her is my question, I was told that the rotors on a 2000 F150 4x2 cannot be turned, I think this is bull. I called my local Ford dealer, and he said they can be turned. Has anyone heard this? Thanks for any help you can give me.
You might want to check into how much you can ground off the rotors. If by turning them, you end up with the minimum usable tolerance then your brake system may overheat much easier. It happened on my '94 Ranger. The front rotors were undersized, IMHO, and could only be turned once. And after turning they would heat up alot on major down hills or with a load. I went through two sets of stock rotors before I wised up and bought some quality aftermarket brakes (power stop, I believe). Besides much better braking the other real plus was they were cheaper than stock rotors.
Rotors can be turned without problems if...you take them to a good shop that will check clearance and run-out before turning to determine if they can be turned. It does not cost as much to turn as to replace!!! Turning cost around here is 8.00- 12.00 rotors will cost 80.00 each...JeremyH nice Jeep, but turning ain't that expensive....
Yep, my 87 YJ is the same way...except I still get turn done for 8.00 bucks....which reminds me. The last time I went to do brake work a I had to use a BFH and 4' prybar to get my rear wheels off due to rust....ever had that happen? It sucks.
You mean pulling the drums? Or did you swap in discs? If the drums, yep...been there. I just make sure to pull them twice a year or so to help keep down the rust.
Rear wheels for drum work. You guys in San Marcus don't have the black gumbo clay like we do east of Dallas...baddest substance known to man. When it's dry you need a pick axe, when it's wet it's like semi-cured cement, and slicker than baby snot...but this ain't the 4x forum!!!
Thanks to everyone for the help. It turns out the guy who said they couldn't be turned was reading the wrong chart. Just goes to show you either do it yourself or be sure the people you go to know how to read. Thanks again .
