Facts first.
1. 117K miles on stock front rotors. Multiple pads, turned rotors once
2. Midas wants $530 for a lifetime ceramic pad replacement to include $138 each rotors.
3. Advance Auto wants $75 each for wearever rotors or $85 each for Wagner Rotors.
4. Ford wants $110 each for Ford rotors
My wife's '09 expy EL front pads are shot and the rotors may be as well. I need to do something. Back in the day.....the aftermarket rotors were known to be shoddyand guaranteed rough, warped/ vibrating performance shortly after install. Is that a fact anymore? Anyone have good luck with regular old (non slotted drilled etc) aftermarket rotors? I can do the job in my driveway for $230 from Advance Auto or $300 if I buy from Ford . I cannot see paying Midas $530. I am torn about aftermarket from Advance or Overseas Made from Ford. Anyone have any helpful hints or opinions?
Don't pay anyone! I use Raybestos heavy duty rotors and they are as good if not better than OEM. They can be had on Amazon for about $50 each, free 2 day shipping if you have Prime. Get a ceramic pad. I spent $150 for 2 rotors and a set of pads.
I've been using O'reillys Bosch rotors - they've got a lifetime warranty (just like Advance's Wagners) and the Wagner severe duty pads - VERY IMPRESSED. Been putting them on all the brake jobs I've been doing the last year & a half... dad likes em on his Santa Fe, wife likes em on the Durango, mom even stopped complaining about the brakes on her mazda....
I haven't had issues with aftermarket rotors, just as long as you stay away from the cheap ones - those are only good if you plan on selling the car with new brakes. As for pads, something ceramic with a lifetime warranty - less dusting, hold up better, less heat issues. I am actually a little concerned with the Wagners, though, because you aren't supposed to put the silencer grease on the backs of them - screws up the heat distribution apparently. Problem is, if they don't sit quite right - they squeak like a bitch. I put a set on my '99 Super Duty, and could never get them to stop squeaking. It wasn't loud, but loud enough I could hear them over that 7.3 from time to time. I'll give them another shot, but only because I think it may have been the rotors on that truck - I didn't have time to replace them and they looked a little shady. If they still squeak...I'll go to a different brand, but stick with ceramic.
EBC, pair them with their rotors and your wife will be happy. As crappy as the brakes are on the expedition I would advise the yellow stuff with EBC Sport Rotors /thread.
Ford is probably getting their rotors from one of the "aftermarket" companies anyway. No need to pay dealer prices, just don't go cheap and you should be fine.
