Anybody know whether any of the aftermarket open carriers will fit in an 8.8 housing that originally came with a LSD, and use the existing ring gear? The LSD that came from the factory needs an overhaul. Seems like a good opportunity to install a lunchbox locker, which of course doesn't fit in the LSD carrier.
My main questions is whether the width of the open carrier is close enough to the LSD width to be shimable?

Any 8.8 carrier will fit this axle and use the existing gears, and yes the new diff may require a different shim combo for proper setup but if you're going through all that trouble why not just install a complete aftermarket diff like the Detroit truetrac or locker?
Thanks for your reply. It seems reasonable to me that the axle would fit any 8.8 carrier, but it's worth clarifying before I buy something that doesn't fit.
I hadn't really looked at the Detroit Locker option. I guess that would replace the carrier entirely. Cost wise, it's probably a wash, and the result would probably be more stout than the open diff/droppin locker. Definitely worth checking out.
