How much cooling for E4OD??

Hi All,

So, I finally got around to putting a temp sensor on the driver's side port of my e4od (1990 F250 7.3 idi with ATS turbo) and as I have been watching it, in hotter climates (the valley of northern CA), it will keep climbing to about 190-210. When I'll slow down or pull off to let it cool. And this is with no load.

If I install a B&M 70268 cooler, and completely by pass the radiator and the other cooler I had(previous owner install), to test if the other two were clogged/getting old, will the 70268 be enough?

B&M 70268 SuperCooler Automatic Transmission Cooler https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CIGE9G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_u9HrzbGVR200C

Also, should I be using 3/8 or 11/32 hose from the metal lines to the cooler. Or does that little of a difference not matter?

Thanks!

I know this is for an e40d and all but the manufacturers that make aftermarket coolers for the c6 highly recommend using the radiator cooler first then hitting the aftermarket cooler then back into the tranny.

There is a possible case of getting the fluid too cold, which isn't good for it either. Right around 200 is pretty normal. I would start to keep an eye on it once it hits 230-240 or so.

DarkOverCast is correct. Do Not bypass the radiator cooler. It is more efficient than any of the auxiliary coolers. I have noticed that ambient temp has a pretty good effect on my trans temps. If you are worried about a blockage in your radiator cooler, do a flush where you pull the return line to the trans and put it in a bucket. Watching this should tell you if you are getting good flow or not. I would recommend getting a cooler form a Ford 6.0L and installing it with a thermostat block to keep from over cooling in lower temps. This is what was recommended to me by Mark K when I was asking about keeping my transmission cool and towing. Look for 1/2" openings for your thermostat block to make sure it isn't a restriction. This is how it looked in my van. I would think there would be more room on a truck.

Woah, that's a huge radiator.

Ok, I'll flush the main radiator out. But 200-210 is normal when not towing? That's a surprise. Hopefully the flush helps.

Thanks guys!

what was the ambient temperature when thw trans was that high and what was the terrain. That is a little bit higher than my c6 usually runs, but not a ton. Also, where is the probe located? If it is closer to the torque converter the temp will be higher since that is where most of your heat is generated.

All in all it doesnt sound like cause for alarm, but i wpuld do a flush and add a good cooler.

One day the ambient temp was 75/80, going 75mph on relatively flat ground (no major mountain climbing) and it hit 210.

Yesterday it was 100 plus on a 3 hour drive. Speeds between 40-70. When it would creep up to 195, I would drop my speed, but it wouldn't really do anything and once it hit 210 it never lowered until I got to the Bay area.

In the Bay area, SF peninsula, I almost never get above 180, but the sea breeze keeps it cool.

The sensor is in the check port on the driver's side toward the front of the trans. I think it is a one way spots, so it isn't getting a lot of new oil by it, so the temps arent quite realistic.

An E4OD will run about 60-100°F above ambient temperature.

Is there a minimum optimal temperature for the E4OD? For heavy towing in hot conditions, any really good ideas?

It's good for it to get to at least 170°F.

The best cooling setup is from the front of the trans to the radiator cooler, from there to a 6.0L cooler, then back to the rear of the trans.
