4.9L Timing Gear Fail???
Hi,
I was running down the Interstate yesterday on a trip and my engine just stopped...DEAD, no power!
Had the tow truck stop at a shop and had the mechanic scan the engine (I was thinking the computer shot?)
They said they thought the timing gears were shot?
It is now going to a real Mechanic, but are the straight 6 engines known for this???
Engine has only 85,000 miles on it?
What are my chances no bent valves or rods?
Didn't hear any knock when it quit....fingers crossed!

The 300 six cylinder is gear to gear, no chain, so I would be surprised if that was your problem. Does it backfire when you tried to restart, or just spin? Just spinning over would indicate an electrical issue.

It's entirely possible for the gears to fail. They are phenolic, so breaking one is not impossible or unheard of.

It's very common for the 300 cam gear to chunk teeth, it's a nylon gear.
Take your distributor cap off and watch the rotor while cranking. If it doesn't spin, check dizzy gear...if dizzy gear is in tact, it's your cam gear.
Replace crank and cam with steel gears and you won't have to worry about it.

Hi,
Thanks!
Mechanic is taking the front off this evening!
He also thinks it is the "plastic" gear!
Hope that is all it is, will know more tomorrow!

Well, no sense in taking it apart if the distributor spins.

MAKE SURE they clean out the oil pan from the plastic cam gear parts! That will plug up the oil pickup screen and cause major problems!

please do ! I went down this road twice as the Ford Dealership that repaired my engine the first time did not and I ended up with a trashed motor and buying a junkyard engine ( that shat its timing gears 6 most. Later )
