I thought the suggestion was that the engine block was different somehow that would explain the different starter offerings. I misunderstood the writer's point.


Yes, I was speaking generally. Of course there were other block changes like 2-bolt and 4-bolt mains, but regarding things that would affect the starter, the blocks are the same. That was the point I was trying to make.


I see what your saying about the centerlines changing. The centerline of the "starter's Bendix" has shifted. That would explain why a 10 tooth starter and a 9 tooth fit the same engines. Yes - I like this explanation.


I don't like the "same starter" is used for 164 tooth flex plate and a 180 tooth ring gear. Are we sure about this? Maybe the gear mesh works out mathematically. Sure seems like a lot of knowledgeable people are/were saying there are two different starters - depending on whether Auto to manual trans.


On the bell housing question, a lot of the racers run the "built" C4 and put on a SFI 460 bell housing. Maybe that doesn't help in this discussion since it was not a stock offering, but if you look at these bell housing specs they don't state the bell housing requires the use a specific starter type (early or late). I don't know if this adds any useful information to the discussion.


So I think you have correctly explained it - the early and late model starters have different tooth counts and different centerlines. But they are interchangeable between early and late model engines.

I think that we would have to see the engineering drawings for SFI bellhousings, but i bet a C6 aftermarket bell puts the starter closer to the crank than one for a manual like a TKO-600
***and shares a starter***

The throwout on PMGR starters differs between manual and auto.
I have had them side by side.

Yes, it was stated/thought that that the manual and auto trans take a different starter, but NumberDummy says there is just one starter p/n for both.

When I went to RockAuto site to see for myself - there was not a distinction between the transmission type.

Numberdummy states that a starter with an engineering date of *1981* is the same for both (and im not disputing that)

Starting in 1992.....​​​​​​​
Ford's part number for automatic PMGR is F2TU-11000-BA (Lester 3226)

For a manual it is F2TU-11000-CA (Lester 3225)

Make what you want of that.
​​​​​​​I know my 3225 doesn't hang up in the flywheel when I let off the key.

How many of these so-called knowledgeable people have the 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog (available on a C/D from hipoparts.com)?

None, because if they did, would know there's only one 460 starter for A/T & M/T

1983 was the first year that M/T (& 4WD) were available for 460's, all 1968/82 460's came with the C6.

btw AFAIK: Only Gary Lewis, ctubutis and myself have this parts catalog, but there are probably others (excepting these knowledgeable people) that have it.
