Remote Entry?
Remote Entry?
Hello. This is my first post here. Glad I found a good online resource for this sort of thing.
I recently purchased a '99 Explorer 4 door 4.0 OHC 4x4 automatic. I've been led to believe that this vehicle is equipped for a remote door lock, but there are no keyfob transmitters for it. I know you can get replacements and find out how to program them, but how do you know if the vehicle is actually equipped for it in the first place? What are the identifying characteristics for this feature, short of having the little transmitter?
Also, as long as I'm asking dumb questions, can anyone tell me how I would know if this truck is equipped with ABS?

Yes, you do have ABS. As for the remote entry, I'm not sure how to tell on the 99. I do know the best place to buy is on e-bay. It is also easy to setup a new remote yourself.

Do you have the keypad on the door? If so, then you have the remote door lock/anti-theft system (PATC). Ebay is a good place to find the keyfobs. Make sure the fob is for the right year. Instructions should come with the fob. They are also in your owner's manual.

Remote Entry?
I am not aware of any factory anti-theft keyless entry system that didn't have a keypad on the driver's door. In case it was possible, you could try the method to activate the keyfobs in your owners manual. If you turn the key from off to on, without starting, 5 to 8 times the doors should lock and unlock by themselves. This indicates that the system is ready to activate the keyfobs by pressing any button on the fob. Lastly, you can look in area in front of the jack and see if the control module is there. Quite frankly, I think you don't have the system and your best bet is to go with a aftermarket system. They have wiring harnesses for Explorers so it's not too difficult installing one. Good luck.
