I just purchased a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT and my wife refuses to ride in it because it rides so rough. Can anything be done? Like different shocks or springs?
How do I know what 'aggressive tread' tires are? If you mean Mud grip, snow or something like that, no. It has the factory tires what I call regular tread.
Check the tires for an LT or P rating (P235/75R15 vs LT235/75R15 or some such). LT (light truck) rated tires have stiffer sidewall that can make the ride a little rougher than P (passenger) rated tires.
Like marragtop said, what's she expecting? Even a 2003 Explorer is a truck based vehicle (as opposed to other SUV's which are based on car platforms) and, as such, will drive with truck-like charecteristics. Maybe pose as a car buyer and go test drive several other '03 Explorers for comparison.
Man...I feel sorry for you but that's how it should feel...a truck. His stock tires should be Goodyear Wranglers. If you want a more compliant ride, change the shocks to Rancho RX9000 series shocks. There is a dial on each shocks to adjust the ride quality so you can pretty much dial from rock hard ride to a soft ride.
