The forward hole in the cross member is bolted to the radius arm bracket on my truck (1974 7500Lb GVWR SuperCab 2wd) so that while the load isn't as spread out as it would be with the full width side plate, there is at least some triangulation.

To answer one of the OP's first questions, when we removed the bolts into the radius arm brackets, something moved enough to make the holes not line up even though the upper bolts were still in. That makes me think the cross member is very important. That and it wanders a bit less now that I've put it back in...

Ok I'm on the same page now. That one with the radius arm hooked to it would probably be worse to deal with.
