When you turn the dial to auto, the feature is on. It will turn the headlights on when it feels it's dark enough, and control the on and off of the brights. I'll have to read the manual again, but I'm pretty sure you can manually turn your brights on by pressing forward on the stalk, overriding the auto feature and keeping the brights on. No way to keep them off while in auto.
It sounds like you want the headlights to automatically come on when it's dark, and shut off when its light, but not have the brights in the mix full time. That would be better actually.
What year manual is this from? my truck does not have the auto indicator. Its a 2019.
My truck is the first vehicle I've had with auto highbeams, and I absolutely love them lol. I drive alot at night and it certainly cuts out alot of the fumbling. Works nearly perfect, still amazes me.
I like the auto high beams, especially with the rural driving I tend to do. However, one condition in which they really stink is in thick fog, so I have to turn to manual in those occasions.
Just to add my $.02... I had Auto Highbeams in my 2016 F150 and current 2019 F250. Useless IMHO... actually annoying how they switch on and off and I've noticed the lights coming on just as the oncoming car is passing flashing the driver. I can be a jerk, but only when I want to be, not the truck deciding for me
On my 19, the sensor sees the oncoming lights coming over a hill or around a curve or whatever before my eyes do, so it dims the lights before I would have and then the reaction time to reach up and dim them manually. Works perfectly, and I don't have to keep reaching up to dim them myself.
And sometimes I'm holding my beer in my left hand, so it would be a hassle to have to set down my beer every time. hehehe.
Part of what you described is how it works on the F250, pressing forward turns the brights on, overriding the Auto function. I'm not sure about the pulling back part, never tried it.
on my 2019, doing this only temporarily disables the auto high beams, to fully disable them, the headlight switch needs to be switched from Auto to just headlights On.

Temporarily, as in only while the stalk is pushed forward? That's my understanding of how it works. It does pulling back keep it on low beams, but only temporarily?
