I have a completely stock 2007 F350 turbo diesel with 98000 miles that i just bought . When accelerating from a stop, it runs so rich that it will barely move and it accelerates very slowly . It burbles excessively and spews black smoke . It slowly builds rpm . As it builds rpm it runs slightly better and the black smoke turns into a medium gray the faster it goes . It takes around 20 seconds to reach 3000 rpm on level ground with the accelerator pedal half way down . Once it reaches 3000 rpm, it runs fine and hauls a_s but looks like it still smokes a little.
The temp gauge stays right in the middle and it does not run hot . It starts and idles fine.
The check engine light is on but i have not read the codes yet and can't do that until monday.
I have read that it could be an injector that is stuck open but do not know how to check for that.
I am a vintage car mechanic and engineer but I know zero about newer computer vehicles and very little about diesels.
Can't get a code reader from Autozone (or Advance, or OReily, etc)?
Is the VGT actuator plugged in on the turbo?
In addition to the code reader, you could be greatly helped by getting a scantool (ScanGaugeII) or a phone/tablet app (Forscan, Torque, DashBoss).
I suggest you read my post again . It says I will get the codes on Monday and that I don't know anything about these, therefore I have absolutely zero idea what a VGT actuator plug is but the turbo works fine.
.
Read the tech folder. Find the post with the 6.0 bible it will help identify what and where things are on the engine. My first thought is as Bismic posted is the VGT plugged in. Find the turbo in the middle of the valley under the plastic wire loom harness attached to the firewall cowl there is a pigtail on top of the turbo.
Codes will definitely help so if you do have to wait till Monday then you have time to read the folder.

I would argue the turbo is NOT working fine. And for the record you just got snotty with one of the most knowledgeable people on the 6.0L diesel and you will be lucky to find anyone to help you now. Good luck to you.
I get it, you're upset about the situation, perhaps calm down and try it again. People here only want to help each other but coming off rude won't help you at all.
The there is a plug with 2 wires going in towards the turbo that connect to a plug, that plug controls the turbo opening and closing. if the plug or wires are bad the turbo won't work correctly. Find that 2 wire plug and wiggle it while the truck is running, if you hear the pitch change you know that's your problem.
ummm...there is a lot of info there but you are obviously not very knowledgeable about these.
Try to help you here as well, bismic is very good at helping and prob forgot more than most know, dont shoot yourself in the foot right off the bat here.
Wow, how to get sideways on the tracks in just 3 posts! Lol
Hey barnett468, maybe you've been reading on some of the other forums or YouTube comments areas. This forum is much more polite than most. Kinda like people talk to each other in real life. Even when we disagree it usually stays pretty polite. As far as Bismic not knowing a 6.0 truck, check out the Tech folder and notice who posted the info and you'll get a good idea of what kind of contribution he has made to this (and other) forums. You (humorously) picked the wrong guy to say that to.
Post back with the code numbers when you get your fault codes, and maybe post like your talking to somebody, that will help a lot.

Thanks for the polite, courteous and informative reply . I will look for the plug now that you informed me where it is, however, the truck is stock and unmodified and unless this plug is prone to simply falling out on its own, I doubt it will be disconnected.
Replying to a post without reading it completely or fully comprehending it or offering more detailed info as you did by explaining where the plug is located is basically useless then to state the post they read has virtually no info when it clearly does and making comments about needing a crystal ball to help, is again useless and unwarranted.
