I'd love to see a blind test between the Rancho 2016 valving vs. the "new" 2017 valving and see if anyone, including a Rancho employee, could tell the difference. I'd also love to hear Rancho's official response on why different valving is needed on the 2017 shocks and I don't buy it's to compensate for the 350# aluminum body weight loss. As I pointed out earlier, the same part numbers are for anything from a 6.2 gasser 250 all the way up to a 450. The weight difference between them is huge. All shocks like this are generically valved to fit a wide range of vehicles. So, what did this new tweaked valving accomplish? Just curious...
Be interesting that is for sure.
I do know every time I get into a vehicle (car, truck, Jeep etc), my shock engineer talks about various dampening forces and how he would tweek it.

Engineers can tweak stuff forever for sure but it's likely a placebo for the average end user like me. Nothing wrong with tweaking and improving so I'm not criticizing. FOX may well have tweaked valving too when their 17 rears ship. I bet I couldn't tell the difference there either...

I like that you stand up for your product and would challenge Rancho to put a mileage guarantee, say like 12,000. In 3 months I will put 3,000 on my truck.
The Rancho 5000's that came with it made it to 4 months.
Don't throwing dirt here, however, if you want to put a guarantee on them, then put one that means something.

Tenneco warrants qualifying Rancho® products against defects in materials or workmanship (except finish) when used under normal operating conditions for as long as the products are installed on, and the original purchaser owns, the original vehicle on which they were installed.
Also the miles don't matter in that first 90 days. Most people make up their mind it seems within the first 30 days or so it seems honestly.
The RS9000Xl is way different than the shocks that come with the FX package.

My rancho shocks on the last 4 super duties i have owned were junk, my 17 f250 ranchos are sitting in my garage removed at 1,000 miles and are compressed all the way shouldnt they had some type of recoil.
The Rancho shocks that come with the FX4 package aren't the same as the mainline Rancho shocks. They are built to a lower spec specifically for Ford to use on their FX4 trucks. Some say they are nothing more than a Ford shock with a Rancho name.
It depends on what type are on there, a non gas charge don't extend.
Now a gas charge will extend at various speeds.
Depending on what shocks we make, depends on the "speed" of rebound of the shock rod.
Our monotube the RS7000MT (like a Fox, or Bilstein) are HARD to compress and rebound pretty fast. If you install one of these, get the top mounted in and cut the strap and guide the shock into the bottom mount.
Our RS5000X and RS9000XL are fairly "easy" to compress and will slowly rebound to full extended travel.

I just made my decision. Fox 2.0's for this guy. It bother's me to give money to Rancho after they sold their naming rights on an inferior product to Ford.
The Rancho's that come on the FX4 are indeed Ford shocks painted Rancho colors with a Rancho sticker on them. This is why Ford has always called them Rancho "Branded." The plot thickens though as Tenneco makes both the "real" Rancho shocks and the FX4 Ford Rancho Branded and standard black shocks. (Along with Monroe and others...) In the end, they are really the same company so that kills that excuse. Now, the same company can put out both great and average products. However, there is absolutely no excuse for putting out an absolutely awful product like the Ford Rancho Branded shocks. All that said, I agree with snelldawg. Even a companies base level products shouldn't have such a high failure rate. So, while the 5000/7000/9000 may be great products, Rancho lost me at the FX4 junk with their sticker on it...
I am waiting for Epic's video before I order, and I dont think I could get them and get them installed before my trip any ways, so Ill see how the truck rides with a trailer before I change shocks. EDIT: looks like I won't be able to wait looks like one shock is starting to leak already, Dw is not happy on a 90k truck to have the shock leaking already.
I have about 3000 miles on my srw sb/sc lariat fx4. When the ranchos fail what am I looking for? Leakage on the side of the shock? Can it leak enough to leave driveway spots? Deterioration of ride quality? Both? Thanks
