compression height

I was wondering what the stock compression height for a 300-6 piston is.

If I remember right the compression ratio on a 300 six is 8.5 to 1

I don't need the ratio, i need the compression height, the pin height, the distance from the crown of he piston to the wristpin. I'm looking for a set of flattops for my 300 and i think i've found a set, but i need to know the pin height to be sure they'll work. It's for a carbed '85 if it makes any difference.

It's 1.78 give or take a few thousandths. It's the same as a 390, as is the pin diameter. There are probably a dozen pistons for the 300 listed on the KB/Silvolite website, one of which is very close to being a flat top. I have a 300 from a 73 F-100 at my parents house that had flat tops in it from the factory. It might have dishes, but if it does they are very small, maybe 8-10 cc vs. 40 cc for the late model stuff.

SR's math works out. The older 300 rod with the smaller pin (0.912) will work for that of 351W pistons - similar crown dimension too.

That's what i was looking to do, either use an old set of 300 rods or rebuh a newer set to accept the .912 pin. Unless i'm looking in the wrong place it's cheaper to buy the 351 pistons and rebush the rods than it is to buy a set of "performance" 300 pistons.

Yes, you're right...and there's a better selection too.

You should be able to have a set of custom pistons made for under $500. By the time you buy 351 pistons and have the rods bushed or buy early model rods you are going to be pretty close to that anyway and still have an off the shelf piston that may or may not be exactly what you want/need. There was a thread about this issue a while back.

I can rebush my own rods, then pick the set of 351 pistons i want and I won't be anywhere near $500 out.

352 pistons are the right diameter and right pin size you have to cut .040 off the top. I looked at this a year ago and have gathered all the parts will build this engine this fall
