1994 Ford Ranger Wiring
Prior owner removed the dome light and door jam switches.
I installed new ones and will be using a non-stock dome light. (No cargo or third brake light.) The door jam switches tested fine, but I wasn't getting any power in the dome light connector. I traced the wiring harness (black with blue wire) and tested with a test light. I'm getting power prior to the factory in-line diode and no power after the diode.
What is the purpose of this dome light diode? Ie. Can I just chop it out or do I need to replace it?
I found 1N4003 printed on the diode casing. Looked it up and found out it is a 1 amp, 200v max. Too bad I went to my local radio shack and they closed a few weeks ago.
What it's for; When you open the door, just the interior domelight lights up, the diode blocks power to the cargo light. When you turn the headlight switch all the way over to make the cargo light on back of the cab light up, the diode passes power to the domelight so you get the cargo and the domelight at the same time from the headlight switch.
If you don't want that function, you don't need it. If you took it out and wired around it, then each time you opened the door the cargo light would light up.
I dont know why the word is to stay away from 2001 trucks with 4r100 because most came with the mechanical diode. The 2000 trucks are the ones with mechanical diode more so than 2001
