73 SWB...new to me

Well, I thought I was out and they pulled me in again. My birthday is New Years eve and this site sent me a Happy B-Day. I hadn't been on here in a while so I thought I would look around. Not very happy with you all. Next thing I know I'm on CL looking for a 61 to 86 truck, I like all those years and I've had a few Effies but I had to have a truck that would hold the CV front end. I found one I liked and talked with the owner for about a week. Sat. morning after I came home from work showered, hooked up the trailer and the wife and I headed south. about a 4 hr. drive each way. It is a very decent truck but one area was rougher than I was expecting. After some negotiating we loaded up and headed home with a new to us 73 Ranger XLT. I'll give you the good first. This truck is almost rust free, more on that when I get to the bad. The cab, cab mounts, doors, inner fenders, fenders, hood, bed sides inner and outer, tailgate all rust free. The PO installed a new gas tank, pick up, and sender. He put new seals in both side door glass. It is an air truck and everything is there but the mount and compressor. PO said it doesn't leak a drop. It was a 360 now it has a 351W, anybody want to buy a 351/auto? LOL Ok, now the bad. The bed floor has the only rust and it is the whole center section, almost like they left and sheet of plywood in there for years and it held the moisture and rusted the bed. The rust doesn't reach the inner bed sides. The tailgate is pretty abused if you wanted to look good. The part that was rougher than I expected was the driver bed side. It is rust free but it is pretty bad for me, a real metal man might fix it but it might also need a bedside. crack in the windshield. Here are a couple pics, I still have it on the trailer because I have to take it down to the DMV to have it inspected to get a Ky title.

I have a question, LMC used to offer the complete panel of the bed floor, do they or some one else offer it anymore? I see the 48"X16" patch panels but I really don't want to build the whole floor in panels.

Very nice! Buff out the paint and throw some Crager SS's or some other cool wheel on there, and she'll be turning heads and stopping traffic!

This truck has genuine Ford styled aluminum wheels on it. If 77 is stamped adjacent to the valve stem, they are: E2TZ-1007-A = 1982/84 F100/150, Bronco & E100/150.

The plastic chrome hubcap (Ford called it an ornament) is retained to the wheel with 3 chrome screws (389465-S45) and nylon anchors (D7TZ-1A100-A).

The anchors have a tendency to work loose, causing them to fly off, taking the screws and hubcap along with it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windshield is the same: 1967/72 F100/750; 1973/79 F100/880; 1978/79 Bronco. Auto glass shops: NAGS #W819-specify clear, tinted or sunband.

But the windshield weather strip (D3TZ-1003110-E - reproduced) is 1973/76 F100/880 with stainless steel windshield reveal mouldings only.

Number Dummy I'm glad you are still around. I think the wheels are actually the 92-96 steel chrome with the semi twisted spoke. I wanted to ask you what the PN would be on a short bed center floor pan. I saw in another thread a PN for the LWB just wondering if I can still get the SWB piece also?

Also, I notice that in the pic of the driver side it doesn't look near as bad as it really is, I'll post more pics to try and show more of the good and bad.

Very nice looking truck! Congratulations, and welcome back!

Will you be going back with a correct FE?

That bedside looks quite perfect in the pic, and if it isn't rusty, then how could it be so bad?

Looking forward to more pics, inside and out.

Meangreen, thank you. The dull paint you see is a very bad repaint on the bedside, no help for it. Not a cragers person but I like them on certain autos, that other people own.

Rougeriver, not going to FE. Probably going 05-08 4.6 3V. I'll post close up pics so hopefully the damage can be seen. I guess I better take underside pics while its on the trailer, be easier.

Monkey, glad you like the truck. Progress may be a little slow for awhile. This wasn't really in the budget. LOL But I have a good start and I'll keep reading here and gathering parts.

NumberDummy, thanks for nothing, just kidding. I saw in another thread they gave a PN for a bed floor and said that it fit all the way to 96. I'll try and find that PN and get it to you, you can tell what it goes to maybe.

There was a "how to" thread about a year or so ago where someone bought a 1987/96 8' Styleside bed pan, then installed it in their Dentside.

The bed pan is now obsolete, no Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

Wow, can’t believe it’s been this long since an update. Thought I had posted more but searched my profile and couldn’t find anything. I’ve been off and on this truck for awhile. Major backyard project and got the wife a 41 Ford coupe that is the front and center project right now. I have made good progress in the time I can devote to it.

in the front I C notched the front 2” to get it down and still have full CV suspension travel. In the back I welded in a 2017 mustang IRS. As it sits at this time on the same trailer 😁 it is 66” from the ground to the highest point of the cab with between 6-7” ground clearance. No bags, I have Andrew’s (ATP) coil overs and big brake kit front, waiting on him to do the rear kit.

I keep collecting parts. Something I’m very excited about is my new AMD “shortbed” bedsides came in already, wasn’t supposed to happen til the end of August, can’t pick them up til Monday. The people selling them said they are heavy which I’m happy to hear. Talking with AMD, they said they stamp them out of 19 gauge just like the originals. Some are stamping them out of 22 gauge, flimsy. I also picked up a 95 short bed that has rust over the wheel well openings but an immaculate tub. So I’ll have a very nice bed in the end. I’m going to be running a 4.6 2V, I have a mock empty motor sitting in there now with a 2017 F150 2wd 6R80 transmission. ATP’s electric power R&P mount and a 2017 mustang rack. Just ordered the one piece door glass kit. I have to get the wife’s car driving before I can get back on it. 🤬 Here is a pick of the wife’s car also.

Just mock up wheels not what I’m going to run.

Wife’s ride.

I'd really like to see pix of that front frame work (c notch) if you have them or can take a few fresh images. The CV IFS swap is widely documented but few have gone to your level.

Nice 41!!

Here's a pic of my Dad's 41, back in the early 1960's. It was powered by a McCulloch supercharged 322 Buick V8.

On FB there is a CV swap group. There are a few that have done this. Only difference in mine to me is that I’m trying to make it look factory. I haven’t finished the inside yet, when I’m done fitting everything I’ll pull the whole body off and finish and box the frame. Here are the progress pics of how I did it.

I used 3/16” and bent in a press to the shape I cut out.

Clamped both sides in and kept leveling everything as I went.

I welded this in. Notice how narrow the frame gets and this is a 2” C-notch.

I welded inside and out so I could shape the corner radis to match the factory.

You can see the filler piece welded in.

Note: on the driver side I cut the frame along the radius and raised the front section to meet the fabbed piece, I did this to retain the factory stamped vin # as part of the frame.

The pictures got out of order but here you can see where I bent the upper and was fitting and leveling.

On the filler pieces I pressed the bump to match the factory. You can see the radius shaped into outer edge to match the factory.

Driver side radius.

I have the Outcast Autoworks LCA rear mounts and they look and fit great, not in the picture.

This is so you can see the C-notch looking forward.

Love it! That is back when hotrodding was real. I know there is really nice stuff being built now but I look at other’s works and use YT for “how to’s” , they didn’t have anything like that. True rodding pioneers back then.
