I've got a complete drum to drum 9" open diff with 3:55 gears. Was a good one when it was pulled quite a few years back, but has been setting for a long time. I was hanging on to it for a spare, but have a local guy wanting to buy it.......what are they worth anymore??? I haven't paid attention in so long that I don't want to let him get the better of me........One of those deals that I really didn't want to sell but if I get a decent price out of it....I would......TIA
If the ratio is a three-fifty anything, the factory ratio would be 3.50:1, since there weren't any factory 3.55 ratios in a 9-inch. The open (single track) differential obviously wouldn't be as attractive as the 3rd member having a Traction-Lok differential. There's also the matter of does the rear end have 28-spline axles or 31-spline?
I got this 9-inch rear end from an '81 F150 Bullnose. The gear ratio isn't desirable (2.47:1 open differential, 31-spline). I got it because it has the 'Torino' large axle bearing flanges so I can bolt a set of Explorer rear disc brakes onto it. I already have a Ford 9-inch Daytona N-case 3rd member with a 31-spline Traction-Lok differential and 3.50 gears I can put in it. I got the whole rear end assembly from the wrecking yard for $100.00. I paid $75.00 for the Traction-Lok N-case.
'81 F150 9-inch rear end assembly.
N-case that's currently in the '69 F100 9-inch housing under my truck that will eventually get swapped over to the '81 9-inch rear end. N-case came from a '75 F150 4x4.
Prices can be all over the place for a 9-inch, depending on who/where you buy it from. Desirable components (31-splines, Traction-Lok, N-case) will obviously make one worth more. You can always ask more than you're actually willing to take and haggle from there.
And yeah, I know the are 3:50's.....I'm just so used to 3:55's in class 8 trucks that my fingers automatically typed that......guess its time for me to go to bed LOL
All Bumpside 9-inch rear ends came with 28-spline axles (only the '68-'72 F100 9-3/8" rear ends came with 31-spline axles. The 9-3/8" rear is similar to the 9-inch but not the same thing as).
Most of the Dentside 9-inch rears (open differential or Traction-Lok) had 31-splines but some did have 28.
All '80-'86 Bullnose 9-inch rears had 31-splines.
Is the I.D. tag still attached to one of the 3rd member-to-housing studs? If it is, list the information off of it. I can probably tell you what it is, with that information.
I get 100-200 for them in Maryland, but they don't sell very well anymore unless it's something special. Alot of people are using the 8.8's now, and with all the aftermarket new 9" rears most of the racers just buy new instead of dealing with a rusty, possibly bent housing and the extra cost of customizing. I have found spline counts vary and don't make any sense, along with people swapping things over 40 years. only way to tell is pull an axle.
