hey ford guys:
i need some seasoned opinions please. i have a wonderful 82 f100, i6, 110,000 miles, 4sp manual trans (used to have 3 with od), it is well maintained and runs like a dream...BUT....it has a 2.74 diff gear and won't pull your hat out of the creek. (it will get 17mpg though
i would like to put a 3.55 in it. i have not had a lot of success finding what i want at the bone yards. it seems there are some worn out gears/axle units but nothing that has suited me. (and some of the prices have been a source of comedy)
i have found a specialty shop (trans and rears only) that sez they will fix me up for $600. New 3.55 rear gears.
i can not do the work myself so i have to have someone that knows what they are doing to make the change.
is this about the best i can do? this price is almost equal to what a couple of places wanted for used parts.
This is what I ended up doing to my '84 F-150 HD. I know you may not like the sound of this route, but it worked out fine for me. My original 8.8" rear end with 3.55 gearing was about to take a dump on me. At the time I didn't have alot of money so I decided to visit my local salvage yard. I walked in, found the rear end that I wanted (another 3.55 8.8 out of an '87 4x4) so I spent some time inspecting it then I took the rear cover off and it checked out well. They raised up the '87 with a forklift and took the rear end out. I got home freshened it up a bit, then spent 4 hours of quality time swapping rear ends.
What I'm saying is, you might find a decent used rear end at a salvage yard that came with your choice of gearing, but check out the condition first.
I have driven a truck with a rear like yours (2.73) and it was a dog off the line, but was awesome on the highway. I can break traction easily with my current truck that came with a C6 and 3.55's.
i have a 3.08 in my truck and for some reason i cant seem to keep the traction. I can peg the spedo without much trying and i get decent mileage. It depends on what you are wanting to do with your truck as to what rear you would want. When my 3.08 goes out on me i will probably replace it with the same or right close to it Anyone ever towed a 20 foot boat with one of these older half tons? I am looking into getting a new boat and wondering if i should get a bigger truck first.
