If you weld up the cooler ends or remove it all together and do not have a tuner, it will throw a light on 05ish and up.
What will happen is the PCM will command EGR to open. Then it monitors PIDS such as intake temp sensor #2 and looks for an increase since hot gases are coming in. If it indicates low EGR flow by no increase in temperature when commanded open then the light pops on and you have a stored code.
That's it in a nutshell.

Thank you Pete. Thats the kind of info I was looking for.
This answers my question.........
I am not going to delete anything then....... When the time is right (meaning I have the money) I will buy a BPD EGR Cooler.
Thanks guys. You all have been helpful with my questions.
When I put the new gasket and updated STC fitting in, I will update the thread.
I tried to spread some rep love, but you know how that goes........
Or you could be like me,and drive around for a year and a half with the cel on until I bought my tuner.
It took my truck about two weeks to throw the code the first time. I could delete the code and it may come on right away, or it may take a week for it to come back on. Just something to think about if you want to get rid of the cooler.
Sounds good. I can do a write up with lots o' pics.
X2.
I'm not sure if my STC has been done so I've been thinking summertime project. Your oil leak makes me think I may have a cover issue also. So any tutorial would be sweet.

I know it won't hurt to have the CEL illuminated, but it will just bother the he'll outta me.
Well, apparently I won't be able to hold off on fixing the oil leak at the HPOP cover.....................
Started taking off at a stop sign last night, and truck the died. Went to start it again, HPOP would only read 8 psi.
STC fitting blew.
So, I ordered the kit from Clay. Waiting on it to come now, and get her taken care of. Hopefully no internal damage occurred, I will find out when I open the cover.

That sucks man, let's hope it didn't crack the rear engine cover....
Preston look at the bright side. You will get to know your truck intimately I hope you enjoy it. I learned a lot and it cleared away some grey areas I wasn't sure about. If you can afford it now would be a good time to buy a Milwaukee battery ratchet. Tool, charger and battery about $150.00 makes life easy. Good luck.

This is my fear, but I will find out soon enough.

Thanks for the tip on the ratchet. Yes, now I know it will be done with the STC and get to practice taking things apart, which will make in easier on me if I ever have to get in this area again.

Sorry to read this Preston -- we'll all keep the good thoughts going that your leak Isn't a cracked rear cover (it seems unlikely, since the leak was 1st so the STC probably just came loose).
I've read most of the time when the back cover is cracked from the STC, it made a audible banging noise.
I'll bet you are not gonna be in that boat unless it seemed louder than normal when it quit.

I didn't hear anything, it just stalled out and motor died.
I was thinking I should have heard something too, as it would have had been pumping at 2,000-3,000 psi at the time when I was taking off.
