I know this sounds petty but I'm stumped. I don't want to drill holes or cut up the dash and with the 4x4 and 6 speed shifters I'm having a hard time finding a suitable mounting location. Anybody mount one in a standard trans 4x4? If so where?

Here you go. I bolted it inside the fuse acess panel. I need to trim the panel to reinstall.
Quick update on the FireHD. First off, I have a third gen FireHD running FireOS 4.5.5.2. This version is not rootable, and the tablet does not support FireOS 5. At this point I thought I was sunk. Nope, you can simply side-load Android Apps onto the Amazon Fire tablets. No need to root, and no need to have the Google Play store installed. This is made MUCH easier if you have another Android device. Simply download the Torque app to another Android device, then use a File explorer app such as ES File Explorer to make a backup of the app. Now you have a .apk file that you can copy to a laptop and then over to your Fire tablet. Once copied to the tablet, open the file with ES File Explorer and select "install". Done. Runs perfect.
Good additional info on the FIRE HD option. Question, though... the current FIRE HD units are being called 6th generation units. Do you know if your experience on your 3rd Gen unit still applies for the newer generations (i.e. 4th, 5th, and 6th)?
According to what I've read, the newer ones should be easier to work with. The newer versions of Fire OS are more and more like Android. I would assume that you could use the same "side-loading" technique that I used on mine, or you could root the device and install the Google Play store. The only downside to side-loading is that you won't receive app updates, since they weren't downloaded through Amazon or Google Play on the device.
I'm not very tech savvy, so I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions here. I bought the Torque Pro and have it loaded on a couple year old Gigaset (Siemens?) 7" tablet.... so far so good. My mount is coming today from Amazon, so, no pics yet.
I see a lot of guys here monitoring things that I didn't get in my specific package from torque. I will need to figure that out !
Is anyone here using an app like 'dedicateit' ,or similar for their tablet? It would seem to be handy to have the automatic start up / shutdown and such.
I managed to drop my ol Nexus 8 tablet and broke the screen. I gotta get a new tablet. The 8 inch unit seems to be the correct size for my purposes. Can I get some recommendations as to what I should get as a replacement?
Thanks, Nick
well you have a multitude of options, again for MY personal needs I went with a wifi only Droid unit (no mobile data) however if you want to use it for more, like navigation, torque pro, emails and do it while on the road, you may be better getting a droid with a mobile data plan of some type.
you have 7" )which it sounds like you liked) but now might be a good time to upgrade to say a 9" or 10", again this depends on the space and what your needs are, a 10" while good for me might not be a good idea for you as your needs are going to be different...
Yeah, Nick... it's really an issue of personal preference which is generally determined by how you want to use the device. I mean, you don't really need excessive memory or pixel density if all you're going to do with it is track your truck gauges and readings, and that approach is more along the lines of minimalism at the lower costs. Then again, if you're going to also use it to watch movies on a flight to somewhere far away, it will take more investment to make you happy.
What I've taken away from this thread is that you can almost spend as much or as little as you want, and making "the wrong or bad choice" is only an issue of not matching your device capabilities with your intended use.
You can see in the list in the first post that you can spend as little as about $50 or as much as several hundred.
You can add the RCA Voyager (not sure which generation it is, I think possibly 1st?) and the iNova tablets (droids) to the working list, both were "eBay specials" at the time of purchase
