I think my starter has finally died. I might get lucky and have it be the solenoid but we'll see. I was looking for some replacements and noticed that a starter for a '68 was coming up with different part numbers than say an '88. Can I put the newer one on, would there be any advantage to it? It's a '68 f-250 with a 240 (w/300 internals) and stock style alternator, no 3g mod yet.

A/T starter different than M/T starter.
FoMoCo is in-famous for replacing/updating part numbers almost as often as women change their minds!
The original 1965 A/T starter part number was eventually replaced by a 1989 part number. The original 1965 M/T starter part number was eventually replaced by a 1992 part number.
Ok thanks. I was a little confused when I was checking on the website for starters and saw different part numbers. What I didn't think of was a difference between a manual and an automatic. Thanks for that info as well. Mine's a T-19.
Years ago I wanted a new, not reman starter for my 72 300-6. It was the little permanent magnet type. I thought it was a great improvement over the old style.
I should be picking it up this afternoon so we'll see. It seemed odd that they're the same but the '68 was about $45, '88 about $60-ish, and the '92 part number was about $89.
