So I have a 2000 f350 that is leaking oil through the exhaust. About a gallon every 650miles. My truck runs great no issues at all besides that. Could it be a bad turbo?
ive never had to pull a turbo on a 7.3. I installed an ats turbo kit on a 6.9idi though. Is it a pain? Does the pedestal need new gaskets or o rings too?
The pedestal has 4 o-rings that you will want to replace when you pull it, then you have the question as to whether or not to rebuild or gut the EBPV while you have it out.....
The EBPV is electrically controlled by the PCM and used to allow the engine to warm up faster in cold weather. It's operation is fairly limited, but if you live in a cold climate, a good working EPBV is usually recommended. Some folks get a tune that allows it to function as an exhaust brake. It also has the potential to become an awesome oil leak itself.
Pulling the turbo is a pain in the everything, since every part of you gets sore trying to reach back there to get it out. Getting the turbo out opens up a lot of opportunities to get to some other maintenance items along the way: all the boost (CAC) tubes and rubbers, intake manifold seals, the EBPV, up-pipes in the back (factory setup is prone to leaking exhaust - look for soot on the firewall), leaking o-rings on the CCV doghouse, passenger fuel line prone to cracking / wearing at the hold-down clamp.
There's a lot going on in that engine valley, pretty much all of it comes out to get to the turbo. There are many seals in there, and the valley is a catch-all for anything that leaks. It so good at it, they even designed a drain hole in the back to let it all out on your driveway.
