Well while checking for the oil leak ( turbo return oil line) I found the right hand side turbo has a little play in it up and down, Can I repair it myself or do I have to get it repaired?
I looked on YouTube and they show rebuilding the Turbos
After I got the turbos off I checked more thoroughly and found both turbos had a little up and down motion. So I purchased a new rebuild kit off ebay I going to attempt it. Hope it's as easy as it looks. Would hate to have to do this all over again.
I rebuilt a set of turbos off a friend's truck and he also bought a kit off ebay. There are no instructions so as long as you're mechanically inclined and pay attention to what goes where it is pretty straight forward. I went through a lot of carb and choke cleaner removed carbon.
Well got my turbo Kits off ebay Friday. Started disassembling and cleaning, I had a little up and down movement in both turbos, don't know if it was too much but did hear some chattering, what I thought a bad bearing in a turbo would sound like. Anyway watched the video Diesel tech Ron made removing the turbos by raising the cab up in front and removed the turbos found the low pressure return plastic thingy was deformed by the mechanic that replaced the HPFP when I bought it( This was my oil leak) took the turbos apart one at a time and installed new parts Note to anyone doing this DON'T PLAY WITH THE VARIABLE VANES IN THE LOW PRESSURE TURBO they are a pain to get back together. Rebuilding the turbos are not that hard just be sure to mark the orientation so you'll have no problem which way to turn the out let and the clamping bands Got it back together and runs like a top Wish I could get better fuel mileage Thanks to everyone that chimed in on the information I needed all I could get
All turbos will have up and down play, its the horizontal play that indicates the bearings have failed or are failing. If there is no damage to the housing or impellers or seal leakage or boost pressure out of spec i would think you are prematurely changing the turbos. To the person who does not see a lot of turbos the vertical play can be alarming.
