Replaced the water pump last weekend and when I removed the thermostat I noticed two gaskets. One was the square O-ring on the bottom and than it had a cork flat gasket that went on top of the thermostat. I couldn't find any reference to a second gasket. I am the second owner and i talked to the original owner and she said that she has not replaced the water pump or the thermostat. The new pump came with the square O-ring only which I used and it leaked like crazy. I took it back apart and put black Permatex on both sides of the thermostat and all its fine. Has anyone seen or heard of the second cork thermostat gasket?
The thermostat housing and pump mating surface has been a problem child for a lot of us. We normally do just as you have and use an anti-freeze rated sealant of some sort very lightly spread on the pump surface then remount the thermostat housing. Let it dry a bit and call it good for the next 5 years...
Not sure why more don't do this. I have used it on all 7.3s I have owned, this being my fourth one. It is cheap, uses an O-Ring, not a crappy gasket, and has never leaked on me when installed properly (torqued in a pattern). No messy RTV needed either. Makes for a nice, clean install.
