thermostat gasket

Has anyone had trouble with the thermostat "o"ring leaking after you replace it. I put a new water pump in and am on the third "o"ring and now its starting to leak. I've been buying Victor brand because thats what the local parts house sells. Is one from the dealer better or different.

Just changed out my thermostat and no problems. Have changed out several others and no problems. Things to check: is your thermostat seating all the way down in the water pump? is your thermostat housing warped? is your themostat housing and water pump mating surfaces clean and flat?
If all of the above are O.K. use some Ultra Blue RTV. Place your thermosat in the water pump, put RTV on the mating surfaces of the water pump, thermostat housing, and both sides of the Oring. (A small film of RTV is good, if you use to much RTV it will be pushed out and could clog the thermostat). Now put your Oring in place on top of the thermostat, put the thermostat housing on and start your bolts by hand and run them down until they make contact. Let it sit for a couple of hours for the RTV to setup and then tighten the bolts to spec.
Hope this helps.

Here is a picture of the OEM Motorcraft thermostat and seal available at www.RockAuto.com : http://www.rockauto.com/ref/Motorcra...ml?rt-1125.gif

I cannot recommend one seal over another in this case, but often it is a good idea to shop around for gaskets. For example, the cork Fel-Pro oil pan gasket on the shelf probably will not seal nearly as well as the silicone / metal core "Perma-Dry" Fel-Pro oil pan gasket that the local store would probably have to special order. I tell anybody who will listen about the Perma-Dry gasket that sealed up the oil pan on my 220000 mile Ford 5.0.

That Motorcraft picture link does not seem to work with the Forum software, but it can be seen in the www.RockAuto.com catalog under Cooling System > Thermostat and then hitting the More Info button.
