I think you might need to turn it while seating it. Maybe tap on it with a plastic/rubber hammer. Sounds like the teeth might not be lining up.

Put the snap ring as far down on the axle as you can and let go of it. Pull out on the axle with one hand and push in on the clip with a long screwdriver. I bet it will pop right into place.

make sure the large phenolic washer is behind the hub bearing against the hub seal. In other words.... large phenolic washer does not stack with the thrust washers.

You nailed it. I thought (poor memory) all the washers went outboard of the hub. I'll take it apart tomorrow, reassemble correctly and should be good to go. Thanks so much for politely reminding me to read the directions. DAAA
