Well my 97 F150 4x4 4.6 is gettin up there on mileage. 170k
It starts and runs as strong as the day I bought it.
Im having a problem with a sticky caliper and have bought the parts to do some work, It also has a very noisy front end.
Im going to be replacing the front hub & bearing assembly $151.00 each side (autozone) thank god... I had quotes of $240 and up, Brakes, calipers, rotors.
I have all the parts I just need a warm weekend to do it.
How hard is it to change the hubs? Do I need to change anything else while im in there? Thanks for any info or advice.
Replacing the hub is quite easy and you shouldn't need any extras while you're in there.
After you have the rotor off you remove the 36mm nut on the end of the axle and then with a brass punch or piece of wood you can tap the axle in to break it loose from the hub. After that you remove the 3 bolts that hold the hub to the steering knuckle. Since you're replacing the hub anyway you can just beat on the flange that the rotor fits against to remove the hub assembly. If it is quite tight you might to use a chisel in between the hub and the steering knuckle.
Let us know how it goes.
I did it yesterday and I must say how easy it was.
I put new hubs/bearings,calipers,rotors & brakes on the front and changed the oil in 2 hours in my driveway.
I left the rotors attached to the hub cause new ones were going on anyway and after 170k miles I didnt have to bang on anything it pulled apart by hand. got to love that!
Thanks for your info.
1st i want to say thanks for the info(looking for 2 hours to find this info).I am pretty sure i am going to have to replace my left hub . But before i do (and pay the $150.00 from auto zone). How do i make sure it is the front hub?I have a 1997 f-150 4x4 with the 5.4L and 150,000 miles on it.The front end sounds real loud when i keep the wheel straight ,or turn to the left, but if i go around a curve to the right the noise goes away.Is this the hub ,or the axle?
CMudFly.
The axles are my next project. After 170k miles im slowly doing the entire front end. I had a kind of "noisy" front end and started with the hubs/bearings/rotors/brakes/calipers. I still have a kind of noise after doing the hubs, almost like a grinding when I turn but not real bad. So I presume its the front axles when the suspention drops from cornering and that will be next. Im not sure if you can replace the universals on the front or if you have to change out the axles if you find out let me know. Ill be digging into that project soon.
Id say if its just a bit noisy do hubs if its kind of grinding during cornering do the axles but just a guess im sure someone else here is much more accurate that what I can give ya. I hope I helped.
Skippy usually if it makes noise when you turn left the right wheel bearing is shot, if it makes noise when you turn right the left bearing is the problem.
Noitce the word "usually" there. I've been fooled before by them.
You should probably jack up the front end and check the wheels for play. If you remove the brake calipers so the pads dont drag at all you can turn the hub really slowly by hand to see if it feels rough or notchy like a bad bearing.
I have not noticed any play ,but the noise is getting louder ever day ( i drive 100 miles a day)also it has a vibration (also getting a little worse every day.again if i drive on a curve to the right the noise and everything goes away)..i jacked up the truck and the left hub has a slight noise (but it does not feel rough or anything),the right side does not have any noise or anything.I am just trying to make sure it is the left hub . ..Thanks for all the help.
Well thanks for the info ..I did the left hub today.Had to use a gear puller to get it off.The rotor was rusted to the hub .I messed up my gear puller trying to get it off .The way i got the rotor off the hub ,was to place the rotor on 2 pieces of wood ,then use a 20LB hammer ,after 5 real hard hits on the old hub the rotor came off.So far it does not seem to be warped. Thanks again for all the help...
