Rear spring hangars

So yesterday I discovered that the rear spring hangars and shackles on my 96 F250 are badly rusted. This was really a surprise to me...I know it's a problem in the rust belt, but I live in an arid climate and the rest of the truck is rust free. In 15 years as a Ford parts guy I don't recall ever selling any of these.
Anyway, to replace them, just grind off the rivets and replace with grade 8 bolts? Anybody know what size bolts? Any tips or tricks for replacing them?
Also, are aftermarket hangars from LMC or anybody a good way to go or should I get OEM ones?

They don't look too bad. Could prob clean em up/paint and get some more miles out of them. Yes, drill/grind rivets and bolt the new ones on. Can't rem bolt size, either 7/16" or 1/2".

Grind the head of the rivets flush with the hanger. Knock the hanger off, then grind the remaining rivet flush with the frame. It's important to grind them flush with the frame because you'll just mushroom them and make double the work. A direct size hanger mounting bolt will be a 7/16".

We we sell a ton of the rear of rear hanger and shackle kits with the bolts and also the front of the rear hanger kits.

First off, the word "just" doesn't really belong in that sentence! That's what you do, but it's a pain getting at everything.

Here's a thread from when I replaced mine. It might be helpful.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...g-shackle.html

7/16" bolts fit the existing holes, and that's what I used. Some people recommend drilling out to 1/2".

I used LMC hangers and was happy with them.

I don't see anything wrong with those hangers.

Why bother thinking about them at all?

X2. Mine are worse, but are still good for a couple more years.

The front ones aren't terrible yet...they're just starting. The rears are BAD, layers of metal peeling off. I'm nervous every time I hit a big bump, and there's no way I'm going to tow my camper until they're all replaced.

My rear ones have been worse since I bought the truck 3 years ago and they are still holding up on my f150 with f250 springs.

Get in there and knock the flaky paint off. Clean any dirt that is holding in the pocket on the top of the hanger. Then get a good look and you'll likely see they are in fine shape. The horrible coating Ford put on is the whole problem with rot on these trucks.

I've seen them with holes rotted through the hanger and still holding. Not that it is safe, but still holding the truck up.

That might explain why the rest of the truck is rust free and these look like salvage metal from a shipwreck...
I ordered a new set of oem ones, (a little bit more expensive than aftermarket parts but my truck only gets genuine Ford)
I'll sandblast them and epoxy paint them before installation.

Those hangers are fine, but if it makes you feel better then more power to ya!

Those rivets do look a little rough, but it always looks worse than it is.
